I thought you were a fallen angel. You thought I was a man of means. Our big old hearts were on the table. Didn't think to look up both our sleeves. I used to think you were the best thing going. You used to mean the world to me. But you went walking, walking away from me, while I was talking, now what was I supposed to think. You drove by honking, waving goodbye to me, we used to be so close. I thought I'd never make it this far; forty-one years been on some trip. But then you said we'd be together, forty-one more joined at the hip. You used to think I was the best thing going, I used to mean the world to you. But you went walking, walking away from me, while I was talking, now what was I supposed to think. You drove by honking, waving goodbye to me, you used to be so cool. I thought you were my fallen angel. You thought I was your man of means. Our big ol' hearts were on the table. Didn't think to look up both our sleeves. I was convinced we were the best thing ever. Well more fool me that I still do.But you went walking, walking away from me, while I was talking, now what was I supposed to think. You drove by honking, waving goodbye to me, we used to be so close.

I knew a girl who'd do anything for you. Lost in a crowd but hidden in full view. Sold her hand, bought a crown, for everything she knew. When she awoke she had found, she'd forgotten who was who. Yah yah yah yah. I knew who a man, who would warm his heart of stone. Close to the fire, that was burning in her soul. To the clouds and beyond, to their native home, flew too close to the sun, he fell to earth alone. Yah yah yah yah. I stood at the door and faced that awful wall of sound. If I'd had a cigarette, I'd turn and grind it into the ground. Walked away back to my car, and I turned the key. Drove away back to the stars, you've seen the last of me. Yah yah yah yah.

You hear the clock striking twelve in the village below. Make out the shape of some train in the soft moon-light glow. Your hands start to tremble, your feet strangely drawn to the track. But if you climb on that train boy, you know that you'll never come back. Drown in the music, let the beat pound out the pain. Don't walk that tightrope over the black-hole again. You dream of the leather, you're veins bulging under that strap. But if you climb aboard boy, you know that you'll never come back. It might take years before you find some kind of peace. The most people hope for is some quiet form of release. You hear that voice and the cords 'round you heart come unwrapped. But if you go down that road son, you know that you'll never come back. If you ride that train boy, you know that you'll never come back.

She was the Queen of the County, and all of us guys were in thrall. I didn't believe she would count me, as some-one who mattered at all. She was at home and so lonely, waiting for someone to call. The Hope of the spring turned to summer, and faded away by the fall. Me and the boys were out drinking, in that dirty old tavern down-town. I can't tell you what I was thinking, just driving my demons back down. And then there out of the side-walk, ghosting to some private song. the girl that I often remember, twenty summers along. I watched her falter and stumble, taking the easy way down. The dirt of the alley suspended, all over the white of her gown. She didn't know me from Adam, I didn't laugh up my sleeve. the serpent had won through the bottle, and I lost another sad Eve. I told the lads I was leaving. And hailed the next taxi down. Got him to stop a the corner, where I got out and then turned around. I walked back to my fallen angel, and offered her my aching hands, pulled her to her feet and together, went searching for her promised land. She was the Queen of the County, and all of us guys were in thrall. I didn't believe she would count me, as some-one who mattered at all.

I never thought about forever no matter what the good book said. I never question what the weather does, not just because I stayed out in the rain. Full moon train, is coming to get me tonight. I thought that love was such a silly business, no matter what your poet said. And now I find I have no way to tie this silken rope, I've little hope to feign. Full moon train, is coming to take me tonight. I cherish the time we spent together, no matter what your neighbour said. And even standing with my heart at my feet I feel no shame. Midnight train, is coming to take me tonight. Full moon train, is coming to take me tonight.

Sitting here alone, my coffee's getting cold Staring at the phone, the day is getting old. I guess I should get to, getting over you. I sank into my glass at the bar last night. I woke up torn and bruised, there must have been a fight. I'm failing at my job of, getting over you. Stars in the heaven, Northern Lights were in the sky, we watched them there together, when I thought our love would never die. When we were as one, you were the better half. I saw you out with him and how he made you laugh. I guess I best get on, getting over you.

Carving up our destinies into one second slots. The machine just grinds away, this racket never stops. Step off the ground. Raise into the sky Drift into the clouds, we'll float on by. Come outside. The factory spits out her drones, her little nine by fives. Blinking in the sunlight they, stagger from her hive. Step off the ground. Raise into the sky Drift into the clouds, we'll float on by. Come outside. Cogs in cogs and springs and gears, this ticking never stops. And we who dance away these years in circles 'round the clock. Come take my hand we'll float into the sky. Drift with the clouds, we'll pass it all by. Come outside. dance with me.

Well my old heart started thumping, the warmth welling up inside. Something in my head started humming, and I was glad to take that ride. Everything she said just kept me running. Back to the place I was alive. But I should have seen it coming, out of the corner of my eye. Now I ride that midnight train. I ride the midnight train. Everyone around me started jumping, word buzzing all over town. I really thought that I was something. Something they want to keep around. Now I ride that midnight train. I ride that midnight train. Now my old heart stared thumping. And I began to dance around. The whole room started jumping. All going up and going down. Everything she said kept my running. I never felt so alive. But then I kinda saw it coming, out of the corner of my eye. I ride the midnight train. I ride the midnight train.

There's no use, you say you can take it. What next will you go begging in the street? I don't know, how you can keep going when the ground you're standing on is trembling 'neath your feet. I pretend, because I can't take it? Who said the party's coming to an end. You noticed, you're worried you say you can't help it. Now is a good time to say good-bye to your friend. But after everything you claim (after everything you claim) you find the world's about the same as ever. After everything's renamed (after everything's renamed) you find the problem's just the same as last time. Can't get away? I've been there. Can't get away? Is there anywhere else but here? Can there be anywhere else but here? Too bad. I know you don't like it: nobody made you hero of the day. So sad. You had to get past it: who wanted to be in your fan club anyway? I pretend, because I can't take it? Who said the party's coming to an end. You noticed, you're worried you say you can't help it. Optimist is lending to the pessimist again. But after everything you claim (after everything you claim) you find the world's about the same as ever. After everything's renamed (after everything's renamed) you find the problem's just the same as last time. Can't get away? I've been there. Can't get away? Is there anywhere else but here? Can there be anywhere else but here? Flying on the wings of angels There's no use, you say you can take it. What next will you go begging in the street? I don't know, how you can keep going when the ground you're standing on is trembling 'neath your feet. Can't get away? I've been there. Can't get away? Is there anywhere else but here? Can there be anywhere else but here? Can there be anywhere else, anywhere else anywhere else, anywhere else, anywhere else, anywhere else Can there be anywhere else but here? Can there be anywhere else but here?

Got a back-wood angel with a barbed-wire halo, overlooks the love that lies between. Took me down to the cool swamp water, held me under 'til my soul came clean. Hold me down 'til I come clean. There's a twisted tree on a rocky ridge in the quiet forest where I lay my head. A medicine bag with a grass wedding ring and a birch bark letter that I know she's never read. On that ridge I made my bed. Well I gotta walk that old dirt road where the sun don't reach, and the cold winds blow. Can't keep on loving' that woman who won't let me in or let me go. Let me in or let me go.

about

Full Moon Train is a sonic homage to some of the iconic Nashville and New York studios of the 1960s. Starting with the Hank Williams-esque honky-tonk sound of "You Were Walking". The album touches upon the styles of Link Wray (the instrumental tune "The Grumbler", which features some rockabilly shredding), Leonard Cohen ("The Factory Waltzes"), Bob Dylan ("Queen of the County" which tells the story of a chance encounter with one's past) and even the rockier stuff of Simon and Garfunkle ("Yah, Yah, Yah, Yah" which has similar sonics to their song "Blessed"), but never strays too far from the Hank Williams hurting tune paradigm, exemplified in "Getting Over You".

The album ventures into jazzy terrain with songs like "Full Moon Train" and "Corner Of My Eye", (which sports a memorable and shreddy guitar solo) and earlier tracks like "Never Come Back" (a Travis picking rootsy ballad about substance abuse), segue gracefully into the punk-country stylings of "Anywhere Else But Here" towards the end of the album.

The intimate folk song "Backwoods Angel" closes the album which, when taken as a whole, presents a diverse and inviting stylistic landscape.

Through-out, themes of lost love, substance abuse, midnight trains and an overwhelming need to be outdoors, dance and whirl through this retro sounding but modern collection of hurtin' tunes.
