about

A country-styled waltz story of sad and fallen angels.

lyrics

She was the Queen of the County,
and all of us guys were in thrall.
I didn't believe she would count me,
as some-one who mattered at all.

She was at home and so lonely,
waiting for someone to call.
The Hope of the spring turned to summer,
and faded away by the fall.

Me and the boys were out drinking,
in that dirty old tavern down-town.
I can't tell you what I was thinking,
just driving my demons back down.

And then there out of the side-walk,
ghosting to some private song.
the girl that I often remember,
twenty summers along.

I watched her falter and stumble,
taking the easy way down.
The dirt of the alley suspended,
all over the white of her gown.

She didn't know me from Adam,
I didn't laugh up my sleeve.
the serpent had won through the bottle,
and I lost another sad Eve.

I told the lads I was leaving.
And hailed the next taxi down.
Got him to stop a the corner,
where I got out and then turned around.

I walked back to my fallen angel,
and offered her my aching hands,
pulled her to her feet and together,
went searching for her promised land.

She was the Queen of the County,
and all of us guys were in thrall.
I didn't believe she would count me,
as some-one who mattered at all.
